HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
This qualification describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
It applies to all persons who may be required to provide an emergency response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings. Southern Cross First Aid deliver this qualification as a face -to -face course at our training rooms or at your workplace.
The essential outcomes of the course and the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the required outcome is as follows.
Respond to an emergency situation by being able to
- Recognise and assess an emergency situation.
- Ensure safety for self, bystanders and casualty.
- Assess the casualty and recognise the need for first aid response.
- Seek assistance from emergency services.
Apply appropriate first aid procedures by being able to
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with the ARC guidelines.
- Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles.
- Display respectful behaviour towards casualty.
- Obtain consent from casualty where possible.
- Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible.
- Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions.
- Monitor the casualty’s condition and respond in accordance with first aid principles.
Communicate details of the incident by being able to
- Accurately convey incident details to emergency services.
- Report details of incident in line with appropriate workplace or site procedures.
- Maintain privacy and confidentiality of information in line with statutory or organisational policies.
Review the incident by being able to
- Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers and seek help when required.
- Contribute to a review of the first aid response as require
